Social Value of Saleyards

SOCIAL VALUE OF SALEYARDS

ALMA COMMISSIONED A RESEARCH PROJECT INVESTIGATING THE SOCIAL VALUE OF SALEYARDS TO RURAL COMMUNITIES.

Extensive research has shown that saleyards and livestock exchange facilities deliver significant economic benefits to regional Australia, but their impact goes far beyond just financial value. Saleyards play a crucial role in fostering social connections within rural communities. Sale days are vibrant events that draw people into towns, create intergenerational experiences, and provide an essential gathering place for those who may otherwise experience isolation. These days are also pivotal for service providers to engage with the community, share valuable information, and ensure accessible services.

Saleyards Australia (formally ALMA) commissioned a comprehensive research project to explore the social significance of saleyards in rural areas. This project aimed to capture the importance of sale days from the perspectives of community members, service providers, and saleyard stakeholders. The research included both in-person and virtual interviews conducted at 11 saleyards across Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, and Victoria.

The resulting report serves as a vital resource for engaging with government bodies and the livestock industry, helping to inform future policy and funding decisions.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with Saleyards Australia if you require further information.
